MOL – making services even more accessible to Ljubljana residents

Ljubljana.si is an open, vibrant and dynamic digital reflection of a city with more than 300,000 residents. Every day, it brings together news, events, calls for applications, forms, projects and information for a wide range of target audiences, from residents and visitors to employees and public institutions. As the volume of content continued to grow organically, the time had come for a redesign. AV-studio was responsible for user experience planning and visual design, while we took full responsibility for the technical redesign and implementation design. Together, we created a mature digital ecosystem that is predictable, flexible and user-friendly for everyone.

A partnership spanning more than two decades

Our long-standing partner, the City of Ljubljana, first entrusted us with the redesign of its information portal in 2016. At the time, the key challenge was to organise a vast amount of content intended for different target audiences into a clear and user-friendly digital experience. The redesigned website was also one of the first in Slovenia to be adapted for people with disabilities. Ten years later, it was time to rethink and refresh the website once again.

Better navigation and a faster path to the right information

Over the years, the growing volume of content had made the website increasingly difficult to navigate, while user journeys had become longer. The website therefore needed a transformation focused on giving users better orientation and a greater sense of control, while preserving the portal’s complexity and breadth. A vast amount of content also had to be migrated and reorganised in a meaningful way.

The solution was a system of dynamic content pools functioning as independent units within a diverse ecosystem. Each piece of content is published only once, in the relevant pool, but is intelligently connected and displayed in context across different parts of the website. This eliminated duplication, improved SEO and created a structure capable of supporting significant future growth.

“The success of the redesign is based on the synergy between experts from different fields. Building on the external creative concept, Innovatif took on a key role in designing the technical solution and ensuring accessibility. Together, we succeeded in transforming complex UX concepts into a stable, fast and inclusive digital ecosystem that seamlessly meets the needs of all users.”

A redesign that goes beyond what you see

The new visual design had to be adapted to the technical requirements. We enabled integration with back-end systems, allowing users to access up-to-date information in real time and use online services seamlessly. The complex structure and visual design were aligned with the latest accessibility guidelines. A mega menu enables users to quickly scan the entire system, shortcuts provide faster access to frequently used services, and an advanced search function responds to targeted queries.

The advanced, editor-friendly Silverstripe CMS enables different levels of editing permissions to be assigned, significantly enhancing website security. At the end of the project, we also provided workshops to train editors in content management.

A step towards the city’s digital future

With its first Digital Development Strategy for Ljubljana, the City of Ljubljana is pursuing the goal of making interaction with residents simpler, friendlier and more transparent. As a key point of contact, the redesigned website is therefore an important step towards the city’s digital future. The project demonstrates that the public sector can set an example for a modern digital experience that goes beyond providing information to build trust between the city and its residents.
